Photographing weddings at The Alma Tavern

A proper Clifton pub, a room full of the people who matter, and nothing posed.

I'm Oliver, a documentary wedding photographer based in Bristol, and I have photographed weddings at The Alma Tavern more than once. It is a proper Clifton pub with a theatre upstairs and a wedding licence most people do not know about, which makes it one of the best kept secrets for a small wedding in the city.

My approach is documentary and reportage. I move quietly through your day and photograph what actually happens: the hugs at the door, the laughter during the speeches, the confetti falling through the room. In a pub, where you are never more than a few feet from the action, that quiet approach matters more than ever.

If you are planning your wedding at The Alma Tavern, I would love to hear about it.

It is one of several venues I photograph regularly here, and you can see more of my Bristol wedding photography too.

Planning your photographs

Getting the best from a pub wedding

A pub wedding works differently from a wedding in a large venue, and that is exactly what makes it so good to photograph. Here are a few things I have learned at The Alma.

Small Rooms, Big Atmosphere

The Alma seats a small wedding rather than a big one, and that is the point. Everybody is within earshot of everybody else, the speeches need no microphone, and every reaction is right there in the frame.

Indoor Confetti

Confetti inside the pub is one of my favourite moments here. Guests are pressed in on both sides, it falls slowly through the light, and it stays in the air long enough to actually photograph.

How Much Time to Allow

For a small wedding with everything under one roof, three hours of coverage can tell the whole story, from guests arriving to everyone sitting down to eat. For portraits, twenty minutes on the street outside is all we need.

The spaces I love to photograph

Every corner of The Alma Tavern

The Alma is small, but it gives you more than you might expect: a bar full of character, a main room made for long tables, and a Clifton street right outside the door.

Guests talking together in the pub before the ceremony

The Bar

The bar does the job a drinks reception normally has to be engineered into. Everyone knows how to be in a pub, so nobody waits to be told where to stand.

The Main Room

Yellow walls, old prints and racing posters, and a clock everybody checks at least once. It works beautifully for an intimate ceremony and for long tables at the wedding breakfast.

The Street Outside

The Alma sits on a corner in Clifton, so portraits need no travelling at all. Twenty minutes outside and you are back with your guests before anyone has noticed you have gone.

About the venue

About The Alma Tavern

The Alma Tavern and Theatre sits on Alma Vale Road in Clifton, a short walk from Whiteladies Road. It is a much loved local pub, run by the team behind Zazu's Kitchen, and it is on Bristol City Council's list of approved ceremony venues.

A Pub With a Theatre Upstairs

Rare in Bristol and across the UK, the Alma has an intimate 48 seat theatre above the pub, hosting comedy, drama and new writing. It gives the whole building a creative, characterful feel that comes through in the photographs.

Everything Under One Roof

Patrick and Ruby held their ceremony in the pub, led by a friend, then stayed for indoor confetti, fizz, cake and a long table lunch, all without leaving the building.

In the Heart of Clifton

The Alma is close to Clifton’s churches, the Downs and the Suspension Bridge. Ffion and Tom married at All Saints on Pembroke Road, had portraits above the gorge, then walked round the corner to the Alma for their wedding breakfast.

It is one of my favourite places for weddings across Bristol.

Oliver took photos for our wedding at the Alma Tavern in Bristol. We’ve just seen the previews and they are just fantastic, and truly captured the spirit of the day. He was so professional and most of the time, didn’t realise he was there. Thank you Oliver! Can’t wait to see the rest.

You are in safe hands with Oliver. The quality of his photos speaks for itself- and every interaction with Oliver was a real pleasure as he took photos at our wedding. He knows what to do, how to make people look and feel great and slotted right into our wedding. Highly recommended 👍

We were very happy with Ollie. From the start, communication was quick and clear - helped by Ollie knowing a local pub with a happy hour to meet in! We met to share plans and for him to understand what we wanted and then once again a few days ahead of the event to go over logistics. The photos are stunning—natural, bright, and full of emotion. They captured so many moments we didn’t even realise were happening and got some amazing angles (including one with a drone!) We received sneak peeks within a week and the full gallery in 8 weeks. We’d recommend them to anyone looking for a relaxed but professional photographer.

Why a pub wedding photographs so well

I like photographing weddings in pubs. Everyone knows how to be in one, nobody is waiting to be told where to stand, and the bar does the job a drinks reception normally has to be engineered into.

You are part of it, not watching it

With fifty guests in a room there is no long lens and no standing at the back. I am in among it, quietly, which is where the most honest photographs come from.

Perfect for micro weddings

If you are planning something small, I photograph plenty of micro weddings with shorter coverage that suits a day like this.

Everything you need to know

The Alma Tavern and Theatre is a pub on Alma Vale Road in Clifton, Bristol, with a small theatre upstairs. It is on Bristol City Council’s list of approved ceremony venues, and it suits couples who want a relaxed, intimate wedding in the heart of Clifton.

Yes, more than once. I photographed Patrick and Ruby’s wedding there, and Ffion and Tom’s wedding breakfast and speeches. You can read both stories on my blog.

For a small wedding with the ceremony and celebration in one place, three hours is often enough to tell the whole story. If you are moving between venues, as Ffion and Tom did, longer coverage works better. Get in touch and I will suggest what fits your day.

Documentary (or reportage) wedding photography means capturing your day as it actually unfolds — no forced poses, no contrived moments. I work quietly and naturally, telling the story of your day through genuine emotion, candid laughter and unscripted moments. The result is a collection of images that feel like real memories rather than a photo shoot.

Absolutely. It is small, warm and full of character, with yellow walls, old prints and a Clifton street right outside the door. In a room that size every reaction is close by, which is perfect for documentary photography.

Most couples book 12–18 months in advance, particularly for Saturday dates in summer. I recommend reaching out as soon as you have your venue and date confirmed — popular weekends fill quickly. I'm always happy to have an informal chat before you're ready to book.

I send a selection of preview images the morning after your wedding — so you can relive your favourite moments on your first morning as a married couple. Your full gallery is typically delivered within 6–8 weeks of your wedding day.

Yes — I'm Bristol-based but photograph weddings across the UK, including London, Somerset, the Cotswolds, Devon and beyond. Travel to most UK destinations is included or available for a small additional cost.
