You get one attempt, one person who has no idea, and about four seconds that matter more than anything else that day. My job is to make sure we are both in exactly the right place when they happen.
What You Are Actually Booking
Most people think they are hiring a photographer. What they are really hiring is someone to help them think it through.
A proposal has no run sheet. There is no venue expecting you, no schedule to follow, and no second take. So before we talk about cameras, we talk about them. What do they love? Where would they feel comfortable? Would they adore a crowd bursting into applause, or want the ground to swallow them whole?
Get that right and the photographs take care of themselves. I have carried props across London so a groom did not have to, scouted coastlines to work out where the light would fall, and quietly talked someone out of a plan that would have made their partner miserable. None of that shows up in the pictures, and that is exactly the point.
How It Works
Tell me about them
Send me a message with your rough date, the location you have in mind, and something about your partner. We will talk it through by call or over a coffee, and I will be honest if I think there is a better way to do it. There is no charge for any of that.
We plan the detail
I scout the spot, work out where the light will be at your time, and we agree exactly where you will stand, which way you will face, and where I will be. If props or timings need handling, I can take that off your plate entirely.
The day itself
You will not see me and neither will they. I work at a distance and photograph it as it happens, with no direction and nothing posed. Afterwards, if you would like a relaxed ten or fifteen minutes of the two of you together, we can do that too.
Your photographs
A preview selection lands in your inbox within 48 hours, often the morning after, so you have something to send to family straight away. Your full edited gallery follows through a private online gallery you can download and share from.

I am based in Bristol and photograph proposals right across the UK. London is the most requested by a distance, usually Tower Bridge, the South Bank, Primrose Hill or one of the parks, and the Dorset coast is a close second, with Durdle Door and the Jurassic Coast taking some beating for drama.
But the location matters far less than the fit. Some of the best proposals I have photographed happened somewhere that meant nothing to anyone except the two people standing in it. If that is a hilltop, a kitchen, or a bench where you had your first proper conversation, that works.
The best proposal is not the most impressive proposal. It is the one that fits the person saying yes.Oliver Holder

How much does a proposal photographer cost?
My proposal photography is £400 per hour, up to a maximum of two hours. That includes the planning beforehand, high resolution digital files with full printing and sharing rights, a private online gallery, and travel throughout England and Wales. Get in touch and I will quote based on your location and timings.
How do you stay hidden during the proposal?
I work at a distance with a longer lens and blend into the surroundings, so I look like any other person with a camera. We agree beforehand exactly where you will stand and which direction you will face, so I never need to move into view. Your partner does not know I am there until you tell them.
How far in advance should I book?
As early as you can, though I have covered proposals at short notice. The planning conversation matters more than the lead time, so get in touch as soon as you have a rough date and location in mind and we can work backwards from there.
What happens if it rains?
We agree a plan in advance. Sometimes the right answer is to push on and sometimes it is to come back another day. At a Durdle Door proposal we chose to return, and the second attempt gave us exactly the light we had planned for.
Where in the UK do you cover?
I am based in Bristol and photograph proposals across the UK, with London and the Dorset coast the most requested. Travel throughout England and Wales is included, and anywhere further is quoted separately.
Can you photograph a proposal with no audience?
Yes. Not everybody wants a public proposal, and some of the loveliest I have photographed have been completely private with nobody watching. If your partner would find a crowd stressful, we plan around that rather than ignoring it.
Do you photograph the wedding too?
