A Documentary Wedding Story
Dhol drummers, a mandap full of colour and one of the most joyful Hindu ceremonies I have photographed. Tanya and Rajan’s wedding at Surrey National Golf Club was a celebration in every sense.
Before the Wedding
I first photographed Tanya and Rajan a couple of months before the wedding, on the streets of Carnaby for their pre wedding shoot. It was obvious within about five minutes that they were perfect together, and it meant that by the wedding morning we already knew each other, which always shows in the photographs.
The Baraat and the Mandap
As tradition would have it, Rajan arrived to the sound of dhol drummers, surrounded by his family, before taking his place in the mandap to wait for Tanya. Both bride and groom looked sensational. A Hindu ceremony gives a documentary photographer everything you could ask for. Colour, music, ritual, and a room full of people who are completely involved in every moment of it.
The Celebration
The ceremony at Surrey National Golf Club was beautiful from start to finish, and I am always thrilled to document Hindu weddings. They are such a joyful way to celebrate a couple, and no two are ever the same. Here are a few of my favourite frames from the day.
Our original photographer unfortunately had to cancel with five months to go, and recommended Oliver as a replacement, and it was definitely meant to be! From the get go we both felt extremely comfortable with Oliver and he put us at ease, which trust me, for two people as awkward in front of the camera as us, is no mean feat. The photos are amazing! They capture the spirit of both days perfectly. Our family and friends loved him, knew him by name and were joking around with him at both ceremonies. We know we’ll be having his photos on our walls for years to come.Tanya & Rajan
