Capturing The Mount Without at its most beautiful

Nothing is posed — just natural, unscripted moments that tell the real story of your day.

I'm Oliver, and I have had the privilege of photographing weddings at The Mount Without on multiple occasions. There is no other venue in Bristol — perhaps in the whole of the UK — that offers the same combination of raw architectural drama, intimate spaces and extraordinary natural light.

My approach is documentary and reportage: I move quietly through your day, working with the available light to capture genuine emotion, laughter, tears and connection. No direction, no posing, no interrupting your day. Just beautiful, honest photographs.

If you are planning your wedding at The Mount Without, I would love to talk about how we can work together to capture it.

Planning your photographs

Getting the best from your wedding day here

So you have made the exciting decision to get married at The Mount Without — now let me share some advice to help you get the most beautiful photographs from your day.

The Role of Light

Light is the single most important element in photography, and The Mount Without offers exceptional conditions throughout the year. Summer brings golden evening light that floods the nave, while winter creates a moodier, atmospheric feel — equally beautiful in different ways.

How Much Time to Allow

The Mount Without has so many extraordinary spaces — from the bell tower with its panoramic Bristol views to the atmospheric crypt — that rushing would be a real shame. I recommend at least 30–40 minutes for your portraits, ideally timed around golden hour.

British Weather

Even in unpredictable British weather, The Mount Without lends itself beautifully to photography. The restored interior, with its vaulted ceiling and natural window light, means we are never at the mercy of the elements.

The spaces I love to photograph

Every corner of The Mount Without

The Mount Without is not one space — it is many. Each area offers a completely different photographic mood, and I know them all intimately.

The Nave

The soaring vaulted ceiling and original stonework create a breathtaking ceremony space. Natural light through the windows varies beautifully throughout the day.

The Bell Tower

The bell tower offers some of the most spectacular views of Bristol's skyline from any wedding venue in the city — and makes for portraits your guests will genuinely gasp at.

The Crypt

Skilfully excavated to create a purpose-built party space, the crypt is a dramatic underground room that comes alive in the evening — one of the most unique reception spaces in Bristol.

About the venue

A brief history of The Mount Without

The Mount Without is, without question, one of the most breathtaking wedding venues in Bristol — situated on the historic site of St Michael's Church at the top of the Christmas Steps.

A Remarkable Transformation

When the team collected the keys to the derelict St Michael's Church in 2020, the building had no roof. The ambition required to transform a roofless ruin into one of Bristol's most sought-after wedding venues is nothing short of remarkable.

The Crypt

The crypt was skilfully excavated by 600mm to create a purpose-built party space — a dramatic underground room that comes alive in the evening. One of the most unique reception spaces I have ever photographed.

Bell Tower Views

The bell tower offers some of the most spectacular views of Bristol's cityscape from any wedding venue in the region — and makes for photographs your guests will genuinely gasp at.

★★★★★

Oliver was a fab photographer at our wedding! Not only did he get stuck in and chat to guests and make everyone feel at ease, he had a phenomenal eye for what was going to make an amazing photograph. It felt as though he really understood how to balance taking more formal shots but also making sure that we spent the day with all our guests just having the best time. And then to top it all off, we got sent the previews the next morning — it was really special to start our first morning as a married couple looking back at some beautiful photos from the day before.

Common questions

Everything you need to know

The Mount Without is a stunning converted wedding venue on the historic site of St Michael's Church in the heart of Bristol city centre. Accessed from the top of the Christmas Steps, it features a beautifully restored nave, a crypt party space and spectacular views of Bristol from the bell tower.

Yes — I have photographed multiple weddings at The Mount Without and know the venue exceptionally well. I understand where the light falls at different times of year and how to make the most of every space, from the vaulted nave to the atmospheric crypt and the bell tower.

Documentary (or reportage) wedding photography means capturing your day as it actually unfolds — no forced poses, no contrived moments. I work quietly and naturally, telling the story of your day through genuine emotion, candid laughter and unscripted moments. The result is a collection of images that feel like real memories rather than a photo shoot.

Absolutely. The restored nave offers beautiful architecture and natural light. The view from the bell tower over Bristol is unlike anything else in the city. And the atmospheric crypt is one of the most unique reception spaces I have ever photographed.

Most couples book 12–18 months in advance, particularly for Saturday dates in summer. I recommend reaching out as soon as you have your venue and date confirmed — popular weekends fill quickly. I'm always happy to have an informal chat before you're ready to book.

I send a selection of preview images the morning after your wedding — so you can relive your favourite moments on your first morning as a married couple. Your full gallery is typically delivered within 6–8 weeks of your wedding day.

Yes — I'm Bristol-based but photograph weddings across the UK, including London, Somerset, the Cotswolds, Devon and beyond. Travel to most UK destinations is included or available for a small additional cost.
