A Documentary Wedding Story
A morning at the Landmark, a ceremony under the chandelier in the panelled hall, a blessing in the chapel, wisteria in the walled garden, and a troupe of singing waiters nobody saw coming.
The Landmark Hotel
Caroline spent the morning getting ready at the Landmark Hotel near Marylebone, and had just a few minutes to show off her dress in that sublime dining room before we left. If you have ever stood under the palm trees in the Landmark’s atrium you will know why I would happily photograph a wedding morning there every weekend. The staircase alone is worth arriving early for.
Fulham Palace
Fulham Palace is one of West London’s best kept secrets. A former home of the Bishops of London, with a Tudor courtyard, a walled garden and grand panelled rooms, sitting right beside Bishop’s Park and the Thames. It gives you a country house wedding without leaving zone two, and the light in the gardens late in the day is a gift.
The ceremony was held in the panelled hall under the chandelier, with a flower arch at the front and guests packed in on both sides. If you are weighing up a London wedding across more than one space, my London wedding photography page covers how I handle a day that moves around.
A Blessing in the Chapel
Not settling for one ceremony, Caroline and Alex added an intimate blessing in Fulham Palace’s chapel, which is a fabulous little room with proper stained glass and about a tenth of the guest list. Then the doors opened and the confetti started.
Drinks in the Courtyard
The Tudor courtyard did the rest of the afternoon’s work. Warm red brick on all four sides, a fountain in the middle, and enough room for everybody to spread out with a drink in the sun. It is one of those spaces where I can stand still and let the whole wedding walk past the lens.
The Walled Garden
Twenty minutes in the gardens before dinner, which is all a couple ever needs. The wisteria walk was out, the walled garden was at its best, and we finished under an arch with the house sitting behind them. Any longer than twenty minutes and you start missing your own party.
The Singing Waiters
The big surprise came at dinner in the marquee. Out of nowhere, singing waiters, who had the whole room going and finished on a showstopping Time of My Life. The best man’s face was worth the booking fee on its own, and the groom spent most of it laughing behind his hands.
The speeches that followed were very funny and quietly devastating in the way the best ones are. I spend this part of the day watching the listeners rather than the speaker, because that is where the photographs are.
The Dance Floor
All that was left was to go and cut some epic shapes. It ran late, it got loud, and the last hour of a wedding is still my favourite hour to photograph.
