The Morning
Hotel du Vin Tunbridge Wells’ bedrooms are quietly perfect for getting ready. High ceilings, soft Georgian light through the sash windows, and just enough space for the bridesmaids and a few quiet glasses of fizz. Alis stepped into her Own Studio dress with her mum holding back tears, and Brad was downstairs in the bar trying to look calm while definitely not feeling it.
Morning light is one of the reasons this hotel photographs so well. The sash windows face into the room rather than across it, so you get soft, directional light that needs nothing added to it. No flash, no reflectors, nobody being moved to a better window.
The Ceremony
The Burgundy Suite at Hotel du Vin is one of those rooms that just works for a wedding ceremony. Warm wood, soft pendant lighting, exposed brick and the right amount of space for everyone who matters. Brad waited at the front, looking slightly nervous and very much in love. When Alis appeared on her father’s arm in her Own Studio gown, the whole room held its breath.
Confetti and the Walled Garden
Out into the walled garden for confetti, prosecco and that wonderful collective exhale after the ceremony. Tunbridge Wells in spring did not disappoint. Soft golden light through the cherry blossom, glasses catching the sun, and hugs from family who had waited a very long time for this day.
A Quiet Fifteen Minutes
We slipped away through the hotel’s quieter corners. Past the wine cellar, down a sun dappled side passage with that iconic Hotel du Vin sandstone behind them. Alis’s Own Studio gown caught the spring light beautifully, and Brad just kept laughing. These easy, calm, unposed minutes are always my favourite frames of the whole day.
Fifteen minutes is genuinely all it takes here. Calverley Grounds is across the road and the Pantiles is a short walk into town, so there is more within reach than most town centre venues offer, but you rarely need to leave the building to find something good.

The Bistro
Hotel du Vin Tunbridge Wells’ bistro is one of the most romantic dining rooms in Kent. Candlelight, low ceilings, beautiful ironwork, and food that genuinely lives up to its reputation. Bottles of red doing the rounds, laughter rolling through every course, and the whole room feeling like a private supper club for the people who matter most.
The Speeches
Speeches that had everyone laughing and crying inside the same paragraph. The father of the bride brought the heart, the best man brought the chaos, and Brad pulled it all together with the kind of toast that makes a wedding feel like a beginning, not an end.
The Party
First dance, friends piling onto the floor, the maid of honour leading the chants, Brad’s brother attempting choreography. Hotel du Vin Tunbridge Wells lends itself to exactly this kind of evening. Intimate, unstuffy, the right number of people in the right space. We left somewhere around midnight with everyone still going.
Photographing a Wedding at Hotel du Vin Tunbridge Wells
Hotel du Vin sits on Crescent Road in the middle of Royal Tunbridge Wells, a Grade II listed Georgian sandstone mansion five minutes from the station and about an hour from London by train. It is worth understanding how the building works before you set your timings, because almost everything here runs on daylight and the light moves through the place over the course of an afternoon.
The Burgundy Suite takes its light from one side, which gives you lovely directional light across the aisle but means the back of the room goes darker as the afternoon goes on. An early or mid afternoon ceremony sits in the best of it. If your ceremony is later, it still works, it just becomes a moodier set of photographs rather than a bright one.
The walled garden carries the drinks reception, and it is a genuinely good one for a town centre hotel: enclosed, green, and shaded enough that nobody is squinting. Allow a full hour there if you can. It is the part of the day guests remember and the part that photographs itself.
The bistro is the room to plan around. Low ceilings and candlelight make it beautiful to be in and demanding to photograph, so if you have any say in the running order, put the speeches before the meal rather than after. You get them while there is still some daylight coming into the room, and your guests get to enjoy dinner without waiting for the nerves to be over.
I photograph across Royal Tunbridge Wells and the wider Kent and Sussex border, from Hotel du Vin and One Warwick Park in the town itself to barns and country houses out towards the Weald. Limekiln, twenty minutes down the road over the East Sussex border, is a completely different sort of day and worth a look if you want to compare.
