A Documentary Wedding Story

A Devon wedding with a Royal Navy guard of honour, a confetti shower, a perfectly timed flypast and some of the best dancing I photographed all year. Becca and Scott’s day at Upton Barn had the lot.

When I first met Becca and Scott it was clear exactly what they wanted from their wedding photography, and I was lucky enough to be the one to capture it. Upton Barn and Walled Garden, out in the Devon countryside, hosted a day that ticked off a genuine wedding photography bucket list moment. With Scott serving in the Navy, the day was always going to go off with a bang.

A Royal Navy guard of honour, a confetti shower, and then a flypast timed to the minute. You could not make it up, and I would not have believed the schedule if I had not watched it happen through the viewfinder. The day was stitched together with personal touches, from a quiet tip of the hat to lost loved ones to a quaich filled, in a break with all tradition, with Strongbow.

My favourite moment of the whole day came late on, when Becca and Scott were lifted into the air, arms out like aeroplanes, and carried around the dance floor to share a kiss. The Navy boys produced some of the best dancing I saw all year, and this wedding was later featured in The Wed magazine, which tells you everything about how good it looked.

Originally we had not booked Oliver for our wedding, but he stepped in with a week’s notice when our initial photographer cancelled last minute. We could not have been luckier to have found him. He was calming, funny and charismatic, and seamlessly blended into our wedding day. He was not intrusive but always there to capture every special moment and the essence of our day. When we received our photos, we couldn’t believe we had a portfolio that represented our day so well. We were in love with every shot.

I photograph weddings across the South West from my base in Bristol, and Devon is very comfortably in range. There is more from this side of the country on my Bristol wedding photography page, and if you are still choosing a venue, the venues page covers the ones I know inside out.

For more big, loud, personal celebrations, have a look at Ellie and George’s Guernsey wedding, Jack and Abi at the Limekiln, or Rose and Frankie at Elmley Nature Reserve in Kent. If you want to know how I work on a day like this one, there is more in why I photograph weddings, and the full range is in the portfolio.
